Back to school social

Friday we were hoping to serve up some ice cream to kids getting off the bus after completing their first week of school. The rain put a damper on those plans and we rescheduled it for Saturday. It turned out to be just what everyone needed and gave you two more time to be party planners!
Jacob, you had all sorts of good ideas. Our favorite one was getting a microphone so you could tell people what to do and how to make their ice cream sundaes!! You wanted them to sign in, but settled on name tags. Great idea!
For the most part, everyone loaded up on sugar. It was only 70 degrees so the ice cream wasn't really what everyone was needing. However, a driveway with riding toys, two nets and multiple "broken" sticks with a dad to make repairs was what really hit the spot! How is it that a kindergarten boy has a 4th, 5th, and a 6th grader requesting to stay longer at the party to play hockey and basketball? Oh, and they include you...in fact you are the one who excludes them most of the time.
Dad and I had fun watching you guys play for over three hours.
The whole point was to help you get to know kids on your bus and Julia a couple of kids in your classroom. An added bonus to having in on Saturday was we got to meet a couple new parents/neighbors as well. Hopefully you'll recognize these kids when you go to school next week:)

Week 1 in the books....38 to go!

This weekend was all about you two, but mainly Jacob. After starting your first week of school and getting out early, we figured we better reward the heck out of you for doing such a nice job the first week so that you might want to go back to school after the weekend.
Considering you were ready to skip school on the third day...your dad made sure I was taking it easy on you.
Here's a couple shots to capture just what you two are like at the end of the summer...CRAZY!!!

Well, slowly but surely we obtained more information about your first week of school from you. You played "zombie" at recess and happened to give our neighbor friend a bloody lip.The mystery to a full water bottle coming home was solved when we received a negative balance notice in your account. "Mom, they have strawberry milk!" you whispered to me:) So you just took a couple like everyone else!
I figured out the bus driver's name and he did us a huge favor by waiting for you to get on the bus in the rain after he had already picked up the kids at your stop! Phew. However, later that day you came strolling into the house all by yourself...I wasn't quite ready for you to cross the street without my help for another month or so.
While out shopping, you recognized two girls from your class at the grocery store by saying, "I know you!" That was pretty cute. Considering you are one of 7 boys in your class it is more likely that we will run into more girls than boys.
After meeting with your teacher, she was surprised/happy that you jumped right in the first week. I hope this means that you'll want to please her and are a mindful student.

Your sister's first day was pretty good as well. She hasn't shared much about her day other than the fact that she didn't cry.

In August...

We spent a week with cousins in St. Louis

Made it to your first fair

Got some more fishing in

Swore you would never ride in a canoe again...but maybe a boat like our friends or a pirate ship

We let you guys pick where we should go out to eat for our anniversary dinner (Shicken Ranch)...Thank goodness we got to celebrate it without you two in New Orleans!

Experienced the Denver Parade and decided it wasn't as good as in the past years because it didn't have the remote control cars in it.

Got to meet one of dad's St. Louis friends and learned a few hockey tricks from her son...not to mention s free haircut from her as well!

Caught 5 toads in 10 minutes...not to mention a crawfish!!

Watched dad ride to school on his new scooter...a week later you got to take a ride with him.
Started Kindergarten without any hesitation

Celebrated Don and Sandy's bday with a cupcake party and play time with Zoey

Had fun "crafting" and getting ready for Jimmy Buffett

Enjoyed your second tailgate and concert Parrot Head style

Had an ice cream social and played with the neighbors for over 3 hours!

Caught more frogs and a couple of Toads

Got meet Tank, and had your first ride on him!

"Up in the morning and off to school..."

Julia, you sure handled the start of your school year like it was no big deal. You couldn't wait for me and dad to get out of your room. I couldn't have asked for an easier transition for you. Going to "Jacob's old shoool" made it that much easier, I'm sure. Having Jacob's teacher from last year made it comfortable enough for you to ask her when the food was coming, 45 minutes into it!

Will you remember the phase of "ugly clothes" and not wanting anything but your ugly horse shirts? Not sure where this came from, but it was nearly a mother's nightmare experience on your first day!
Two loads of laundry done before 8:20 to clean the shirt that you wore the day before was a flop! After going through the clean loads, your shirt was nowhere to be found! Duh, because it was right where we left it the night before...Smack dab in the middle of your room, on the floor! So after a couple spot cleans, it was good to go and you my friend won the battle of the day! However, the next day I won and made you wear the clothes that were picked out for you and not "ugly".

After school I was ready to treat you to anything in town...well almost. Instead of going to a dine in place, we picked a taco and tamale up at our local food truck. I have been staring at that truck all summer and was dying for anything to eat! It was just what we needed. A little snack in between attempts to cross the monkey bars at the playground!

I am still needing some practice taking pictures with my new camera, but you don't like to cooperate! Imagine that. Here's to next week and another one after that! One week at a time:) Good thing your are special helper next week!

Picked more "wedgies" this week than we have picked vegetables out of our garden!

"I want to wear ugly clothes!"

Yep! That what you are saying today. The other day it was "I don't like dresses anymore!"
Won't mess with you little girl. On the brighter side, you are brushing your hair all by yourself and doing a nice job!
The reason you have these balloons in the picture is because our neighbor brought them over from the girl in her photo shoot..."you can give these to the cute little girl across the street." Wow, you have got them fooled:)
Just kidding. You are cute and you keep us on our toes and give us lots of smiles! Now I just need to figure out what clothes you will wear for school tomorrow.

Just before kindergarten you...

Just needing to jot some notes down on what you were like as a 5 1/2 year old getting ready to start kindergarten...

When I carried you to your own bed tonight your feet hung down to just below my knees. You didn't pat me on the back because you were completely zonked out.

You like to dress yourself right away in the morning and refuse to wear any of your cotton shirts because they aren't slick.

You still prefer your food to be separate and chicken and noodles are your go to. Your vegetable consumption has slowed down because your fruit intake continues to sky rocket!
When you request food to eat it can become quite the list and by the time your done with your request you can't even remember what you asked for. The other day it was blueberry cereal, chicken, cantaloupe, salami and oh geez I can't even remember, oh yes, something dry or something cold. Too funny!
Tonight we made you eat cereal instead of ordering pizza because you and Julia couldn't keep your hands off each other! We shall see if it was a lesson learned or a night you will choose to remember.

I love to watch you carry on a conversation independently. It usually involves lots of questions for the persons on the other end, but it's so cute nonetheless. Hopefully you will have some classmates that you can discuss things like fishing, catching toads, listening to music and bands they won't recognize...and so on.

You don't really like to write or practice school work at all. You would be quite good at it if you did. This morning you made me come and check out you drawing on the shower door, that was a plus!
Later that night you helped me jazz up the bags game for the Jimmy Buffett concert. Using a whole poster board to draw a catfish, you can cut an impressive straight line with the scissors.
You are our music man. This week you have been requesting "Juicyfruit" "Hey good looking" it will be fun to see you at the Buffett tailgate and concert. We still smile when we hear you sing...and I think it will be one of our favorite memories of you at this age.
Now when it comes to bugs, butterflies and toad hunting, I'd say it's been quite an impressive summer. From monarchs to bull frogs...I think you are quite happy with your catches. That doesn't even count the ones you caught with a rod and reel this summer.
Anyhow, you are fun and difficult at the same time. Your listening skills are quite sophisticated and can get you in trouble. I have a feeling you are just needing a little more independence and you will be getting that!
Things that you say:
"Is a minute or an hour longer?"

Class of 2028

Our Little Man Evans isn't so little anymore. Your new adventure on the bus went off without a hitch. Not even a tear from me or your sister! You even made it back with everything you went to school with...impressive!

The day went by quickly for both of us. In fact you told me, "I thought I was going to be at school longer!"
We had trouble getting much out of you, aside from the pretty believable "teasing" stories you told. The first one being you caught a frog at recess. The second one that you forgot to bring your lunch with you and had to eat a hot school lunch! You had me fooled until I picked up your lunch box and opened it to see the empty wrappers.

By the looks of it, I'd say you had a pretty good day! You even got to sit next to Stockton on the way home:)

Someone must have shared with you that you will have 180 days of school. You just couldn't get over it and how long it was going to be before you were done with Kindergarten! Should I tell you that if you listen and learn quickly, read instead of watch television, eat healthy and gets lots of sleep, play a sport and have good sportsmanship, practice piano and guitar...that you might be smart enough to skip a grade!! No pressure son, just have fun and be a nice boy...that will make it go quickly.
